Alex had already poured himself a brandy when Winters entered the study.

“Will you be retiring soon, sir?”

Alex waved the snifter in his direction. “After I finish this. Why don’t you go on to bed. I can manage.”

He smiled in spite of himself, remembering how funny Scotty had thought it was for him to have someone help him dress. Damn … How often his thoughts went back to the winter, and his days with Scotty. She was a free spirit, somehow always managing to out-wrestle her troubles and come out on top. He’d had the feeling from the moment he brought her home that she wouldn’t let the gray skies of San Francisco get her down. She hid her homesickness well—most of the time.

“Something humorous, sir?”

Alex shook his head. “Winters, now that you’ve met Miss MacDowell, what do you think of her?”

Winters drew himself up tall and crossed to the fire. “I don’t usually find that I’m wrong, sir.”

Alex raised an eyebrow. “You still think she’s just Scottish riffraff?”

“No, sir. I was going to say, that she’s quite a fetching young thing … for a Scot.”

Alex glared into the fire. “Yes, isn’t she …”

“Will there be anything else, sir?”

“No,” he answered, toasting the valet with his brandy. “Good night, Winters.”

Winters bowed. “Good night, sir.”

Alone again, Alex brooded about the evening. God, but the girl was growing on him. As they’d entered the theater, every male eye was on her. He’d had an urgent need to force her to keep the cape on. She was a beauty in the pearl gray gown. But that wasn’t all, was it? Hell, yes, she was beautiful, but she was also so damned natural. Nothing fake about her. Nothing, he thought, his mind picturing her sweet, ample bosom. And her laugh … God. It was like fine crystal shimmering in the wind. And, he thought dryly, she’d bestowed it on a number of curious, single men during intermission—all of whom had become immediately infatuated with her.

Anger swelled within him. After the performance, he’d been pulled aside by one of the young men and asked if he could call on Scotty. He almost punched the fellow out. Why, the boy had talked to him as though he were Scotty’s father, for God’s sake! She might have that childlike appeal, but she was no child, and he sure as hell wasn’t old enough to be her father!

He took a great gulp of brandy and scowled into the fire. If only it didn’t take so damned long to build a hotel. He didn’t know how much longer he would last against her natural allure.
